1971年，美國一位男士刑滿出獄，在乘巴士返家途中，向乘客們道出自己的境況。在獄中他寫信給妻子，如果原諒他，就把一條黃絲帶縛在屋前老樹上，他看見了便會下車回家。如果他不見黃絲帶，表示她不原諒他，他也只好怪自己，會留在巴士上遠去不返。
